Editor's Note:   When I first came to Coral Ridge, a gentleman with a disarming smile, Mr. Charlie Hainline, immediately took me under his wing and greatly influenced my life in the area of goal-setting. To know him was to know humility -- a self-described 'poor Kentucky farm-boy'. Yet not a person of low self-worth or direction, his worth was found in where he was headed and the 'checks' he could cash or better still, give away. His winning smile endorsed his challenges, and we listened. While there's so much that could be said about him...

I believe his final set of annual goals -- at age 78 -- speak most eloquently for themselves.... (read below)

1994 Goals -- Charlie Hainline

"My greatest Goal is to give glory to God. By obeying, serving, pleasing, enjoying and loving my Lord. In these 53 years, I find it is impossible to outgive Him. This is why I set goals."

SPIRITUAL GOALS:

There are 7,467 blank checks in the Bible. II Peter 1:4 "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

  1. Cash 35 'checks' each day.
  2. To be continually conformed to the image of Christ Jesus.
  3. To gain in knowledge of our Lord in order to increase the effectiveness of my witness.
  4. To try harder every day to maintain my focus on Jesus instead of on circumstances.
  5. Daily quiet time of 3 hours, consisting of:
  1. Two hours in the Bible
  2. 1/2 hour in prayer
  3. 15 minutes in Scripture memory
  4. 15 minutes in Scripture memory review.
  5. Memorize ONE promise each week.

MINISTRY GOALS:

  1. Ask my Lord for 2,000 professions in '94.
  2. Go to prison 6 days each week. Now starting my 43rd year. Only 7 yrs.
  3. Train 6 people in E.E. each semester for total of 12 for year.
  4. Followup each profession of faith with 2 contacts first week; 1 contact for next 4 weeks. Pray for them daily
    (I Thess. 2:8).
  5. Have 2 guests at our CBMC outreach twice a month.
  6. Lead II Chron. 7:14 prayer group each week (our 15th year).
  7. Lead Promises of God Sunday School Class (our 28th year).
  8. Meet 7 nights a week (6-7pm with Walk Through The Bible Study Group.
  9. Meet every 3 months with Goal Partner to be held accountable.
  10. Start Half-way House for prisoners. Starting Book. Letting my friends each write chapter. All proceeds go to Half-way house.
  11. Pray daily for my physical child as well as my spiritual children.

MENTAL GOALS:

Place more emphasis on exercising my mind than my body.

Attend Bill Gothard Refresher Course.

Never go out without a book. Buy up time. Share what I read.

Read a book every 2 weeks.

GOAL-PARTNER CONTRACT:

I promise to pray for his goals 5 days a week. The ONLY EXCEPTIONS would be Christian Seminars or Vacation. My Goal Partner promises to pray for ONE GOAL of mine each day. Goal setting is Accountability; first, to the Lord, and second, to my Partner. At the end of the year, we are to inform our Goal Partner what the Lord accomplished through us. You will find it simpler as you pray, to use multi-colored marker to remember where you left off each day. (Eph. 3:20)

Is it any wonder that a man with more than 60 people praying for his goals each & every day accomplished so much and influenced so many?

Yet if you knew Charlie, you knew he always deflected the credit elsewhere...

"...Praise Jesus".

He wouldn't even leave it safely at home when he went inside prisons each day.
Yet he frequently baited his hook with it.)
