#1. Buy a Bible. There's no internet replacement for having your very own copy of God's Word to you. Go to your local Christian bookstore, and ask their advice. There are several listed in the Business-section of our IndyChristian start-page. And there are more listed in the local Christian Phonebook also reachable from our start-page. Should I get a contemporary version?
#2. Build a Habit. The apostle Paul talks to us over & over again about building a life of self-control and self-discipline. One of the best habits you can build is to study God's Word daily. When you're new at it, building the habit is more important even than how much you actually get read or studied. So you may need to simply start by absolutely committing to yourself & God, that you'll get up early (or whenever works for you) and read 5 minutes a day from His Word. May we suggest NOT starting at the beginning in this case, but rather, start at the beginning of the New Testament?
#3. Get a group. Would you try to learn to fly by simplying reading a book about flying? You'd get with someone who's capable of excellent instruction, right? And groups are great for more things than just the study itself -- they help build Christian relationships that will help you grow in many ways. One of the great parts about having a local Christian portal like IndyChristian.com is to be able to better connect with a number of Bible-study groups around town. And we only list groups which affirm the core truth of God's Word.
- Your church probably has some groups, including "cell groups" that meet during the week. If you don't have a good solid church yet, click to see a list of many in our area.
- CBMC Groups -- These are friendly groups primarily formed for people in the marketplace. And since they're interdenominational in nature, they're a good place to get solid core evangelical teaching while being able to ask about the minor distinctives between denominations. They meet over breakfast or lunch in many locations around the city and would welcome you warmly. Click to check out one near you.
- Bible Study Fellowship -- These groups run semesters of bible study classes. They intensely read, study, and discuss God's Word without mention of particular churches or denominations. Are you serious about getting to know His Word? Click to find out when the next semester starts.
- Crossroads Bible College -- This is a great place to study the scriptures at the college/seminary level. Are there other evangelical colleges & seminaries in the Greater-Indianapolis area? Read on.
- Many of the other IndyChristian ministries in the left-hand navigation-bar at IndyChristian can help you study the scriptures. Or they can help recommend a group that would be perfect for you. Surf their sites and see what they have to say about studying God's Word.
- Many of our Recreational programs also include the study of His Word. Example: Sign your boy or girl up for "Bible & Basketball" at Indiana Basketball Academy. Have fun learning the Bible... and basketball.
