Stopping By An SBC Block Party

As I dropped off a couple of our cafe friends downtown, I enjoyed 'accidentally' (Can you spell providentially?) driving by 3 people openly praying together out on a street corner. Then I noticed their tent nearby. And a bunch of people all around.

Could it be? Sure enough... As I later circled back on my way home I confirmed my guess: The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) had started their neighborhood block parties -- a great feature benefitting the host-city for their week-long annual meeting. This year it's here in Indianapolis... and the 'parties' have begun.

So I at least captured some photos for your enjoyment, and was able to talk briefly with a few folks -- some from Indy, some from elsewhere across the country.

I was able to talk briefly with Steve Davis and his wife, Diana. Steve's the Executive Director of the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana (headquartered in Indy). I was very pleasantly surprised to hear there are now over 425 SBC churches across the state. And better yet, it was good to hear that they 'have a plan' for carrying out the Great Commission here in our city & state... a geo-plan, even.

"We have accepted the challenge to prayer walk every street and road in our state, with the goal of sharing the gospel with every home over the next five years." [SCBI.org]

In fact, Pastor Tom Polak said today that nearly 600 Hoosiers have prayed to receive Christ just in the last few weeks here, during Crossover '08, leading up to the convention.

[Stay tuned all you Transform Indiana advocates... We're hoping to wrangle an invitation sometime to come bring the monthly TI meeting to SCBI hqtrs and hear from Steve... and find some practical ways to synergize for the sake of the Great Commission.]

Btw, here's the SBC video commercial you've been seeing locally over the last week... (and we've added it to our 'community tv' player in the RH sidebar here at IndyChristian)...
