Evangelism Explosion Trail Talk:
Back in 1998-99, when the Lord first led me to my ministry on the Monon Trail in Broad Ripple, I had a presentment one warm summer Sunday night that I should go over and walk the trail. The urging was fairly strong, so I went. I walked up and down the trail a bit, then strayed off over by the fire house. There were three young ladies stapling posters promoting a band onto a telephone pole. Two of them looked pretty Gothic, all dressed in black and lots of body piercing. The third looked different, dressed nicely, like she didn't really belong with the other two.
The two Gothic gals, moved on to the next pole. I stopped and talked to the third. She seemed really interested in spiritual matters and seemed to hang on my every word. She allowed me to give the whole gospel message very patiently. I took a breathe and asked if she wanted to pray Jesus into her heart that very night.
I wish I could report that she said yes, and a full-on party erupted in heaven at that moment. But that was not the case. She explained that she was in sin and that sin was going to lead her into a worse sin. I guessed what she was telling me, so with a little prompting, she spilled out her whole story.
Raised in a conservative Christian home in a small town in Ohio, she had married and moved with her husband to Indianapolis to find work. She had become sexually involved with a man of another race and was carrying his child. Her marriage seemed broken, and she was just wandering around Broad Ripple trying to decide what to do when she teamed up for a time with the two other gals. You see, the father of the child she was carrying was pressuring her to get an abortion. Not only that, but her dad was racially prejudiced, and she trembled at the thought of telling him about her situation. As I recall, her husband had already returned to her little town in Ohio.
I hardly knew what to say. The words just came. I told her about the Crises Pregnancy Center nearby on north Keystone. The thought that her husband and father would take her back overwhelmed me, and I urged her to keep her baby and get in her car and go back to her little town that very night. I gave her my phone number and promised to help if I could, gave her a big hug and she disappeared in the warm summer night.
I don't know what she decided. I have never heard from this dear gal since. I went to the Monon Trail to save souls, but not in the way that it turned out. God is sovereign. He led to the trail and I pray that He changed two lives that night.
